Knowledge & Skills

What knowledge and skills do you need to be successful in college and the workplace?

Here are a few things you can do in high school to prepare yourself:

  • Pick the classes you need to graduate and to be ready for college. Figure out which courses you need to take all four years of high school.
  • When older friends and family members come home for vacations, talk to them about what their jobs or college are like.
  • Prepare for and take the PSAT and HSAs.
  • Visit the colleges that especially interest you.  Make sure your applications are in on time.
  • Get more ideas on preparing yourself year-by-year here.
All the knowledge and skills in the world won't get you a job unless you're hired.  For most jobs, you'll have to have at least one interview and in order to get the interview, you'll have to submit a résumé.

Shortcuts like this are fine when writing to your friends but be careful that they don't slip into other places like schoolwork and more 'formal' writing.  Capitalization, punctuation, and spelling rules still need to be followed, even in email!

#42  Your high school grades can be a sign of how much money you will earn later.

One study showed that a rise of one letter grade (from C to B) meant almost 13 percent more in earnings later in life.
